Transition Schedule

On this page, you will find the schedule (as of February 10, 2026) for the transition from Blackboard to Moodle as the central learning platform. 

Please note the following two dates in particular, as they will affect access to your Blackboard courses:

  • As of January 1, 2027, you will only be able to access Blackboard in “read only” mode. 
  • As of March 15, 2027, you will no longer be able to access Blackboard at all (end of license).

Summer semester 2026  

  • Blackboard can be used with no restrictions by instructors and students.
  • Moodle will be made available to instructors and employees in a preliminary version as part of a pilot phase. Instructors and employees can familiarize themselves with the new platform, transfer courses/content from Blackboard that are still needed to Moodle, and prepare new Moodle courses for the winter semester. FUB-IT’s “Teaching, Studying, Research” division is here to provide you with support during this transition – with workshops and reference materials. Piloted teaching may take place for selected courses. We will let you know as soon as everything is ready and you can access the new learning platform.

Winter semester 2026/27

  • Moodle will be fully implemented as the university’s new central LMS. New courses will only be accessible through Moodle. 
  • No new courses will be offered in Blackboard. The learning platform will be phased out gradually:
    • Until December 31, 2026: Existing Blackboard courses can still be edited. We strongly recommend that you save any materials you still need from Blackboard elsewhere and/or transfer them to the new LMS by December 31, 2026.
    • As of January 1, 2027: Only limited access to Blackboard courses (read-only) will be possible. The reason for this is the end of support for the Blackboard version (Blackboard Learn Original) used at Freie Universität by the provider Anthology.
    • As of March 15, 2027: you will no longer be able to access Blackboard at all (end of license).

Starting summer semester 2027

  • Moodle will be continuously enhanced as the central learning platform by FUB-IT.
  • Blackboard will no longer be available.
